THE LABOUR PARTY:

Dear Keir Starmer,

We write to you today about what should be considered the biggest roadblock to progress in Britain today: our democratic deficit. We are a group of people from all across Britain who go by the name of ‘People Demand Democracy’ and we urge you to read the following letter and take its contents seriously.

The UK will likely hold a general election in the next 12 to 15 months, giving the people of this country the opportunity to input into who should run it. According to the polls, there is a very good chance you will become the next Prime Minister. However, a different government will not solve the deeply entrenched divisions shackling the UK public, preventing us from uniting to tackle the huge challenges facing us. The political system itself is not fit for purpose, it is not serving the needs of the majority and the resentment towards Westminster will only deepen unless a new government offers real change.

The people of the UK are more disillusioned by political lies and corruption than ever before. After years of battling over Brexit, lockdown parties, abuse claims, crumbling public services and falling living standards, people are sick to the back teeth with politicians. Very few people believe their MPs share their concerns, nor feel as though they have a voice to express their dissatisfaction with the way things are. This must change.

What’s more, we urgently need to stride quickly towards solutions to the major challenges facing Britain today: poverty, inequality, ill-health, job insecurity, not to mention a climate crisis that is spiraling out of control. Our current system does not reward political parties for taking the long term view on these issues, stuck in 5 year election cycles, and it shuts out ideas we might need to tackle them.

What People Demand Democracy is calling for is simple: a fair, proportional voting system for Westminster elections and a permanent, legally-binding national House of Citizens, selected by democratic lottery. Voters favour a new electoral system over the old by almost 2-1. The Labour Party Conference in 2022 endorsed a new, proportional electoral system with around 80 per cent support. But your leadership has refused to accept that democratic decision.

We urge you, the leader of the Labour Party, to announce that you will hold new national elections with a proportional voting system and set up a House of Citizens within six months of getting into office. We encourage you to embrace this upgrade to our democracy: proportional voting so every vote counts and a permanent Citizens’ Assembly made up of people from all walks of life to discuss major long term issues without party political pressures.

If you do not do so by 30th September, People Demand Democracy will take proportionate action to get our message across to you and the Labour Party leadership. We are left with no other choice but to take a stand for what’s right and take back our power as citizens.

We need unity. We need action, not words. We need genuine, courageous leadership. But we also need a voice.

We invite you to engage with us on this question of democratic reform and show the historic leadership our people deserve.

Signed,

People Demand Democracy

THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY:

Dear Prime Minister,

We write to you today about what should be considered the biggest roadblock to progress in Britain today: our democratic deficit. We are a group of people from all across Britain who go by the name of ‘People Demand Democracy’ and we urge you to read the following letter and take its contents seriously.

The UK will hold an election within the next 15 months, giving the people of these isles the opportunity to select who should run the country for the next 4 years. There is a very good chance you will lose the election. Regardless of the outcome, a new government will not solve the deeply entrenched divisions shackling the UK public, preventing us from uniting to tackle the huge challenges facing us. The political system itself is not fit for purpose, it is not serving the needs of the majority and the resentment towards Westminster will only deepen unless candidates offer real change.

What People Demand Democracy is calling for is simple: we urge you, the Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party, to announce that you will hold new national elections with a proportional voting system and set up a House of Citizens within six months of getting into office.

If you do not do so by 30th September, People Demand Democracy will take proportionate action to get our message across to you and the Conservative Party leadership. We are left with no other choice but to take a stand for what’s right and take back our power as citizens.
